5G Recommendations Expected in 10 Days: TRAI Official

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is likely to submit its much-awaited recommendations around pricing of 5G airwaves in around 10 days, given the huge task involved, a top official said.

“The 5G recommendations are expected to be out in a week or 10 days since the initiative is voluminous including multiple bands,” TRAI Secretary V Raghunandan told ET. “We are almost there. The final process is sizeable. Teams across three divisions are working on it to
make it comprehensive and error-free,” the official added.

The telecom industry has termed the current price of 5G spectrum in the 3300 MHz-3600 MHz band—Rs 492 an MHz—as recommended by TRAI as exorbitant, and called for it to be drastically cut by as much as 95%. The government has also made it clear that it wouldn’t hesitate to rationalize the coveted airwaves’ price to make the availability of services affordable for users.
